The Father Lu the Lion and Father Mark awards are given to the students who consistently display exemplary conduct, effort, Christian Service and leadership through example. "The Father Lu the Lion" award is given in grades 1 - 4, and "The Father Mark" award is given in grades 5-8.
These awards represent the mission and philosophy of St. Matthew School, and are the awards that all students are capable of receiving. Each student has special gifts and strengths. Some are strong in academic areas, while others have unique talents in the areas of fine arts or athletics. We recognize those students, as well as personal improvements made by individual students. The Father Lu and Mark awards exemplify not only the behaviors we expect from all SMS students, but the behaviors that all students can exhibit regardless of their individual strengths and weaknesses. At St. Matthew School, we celebrate personal best, we acknowledge with pride the accomplishments of others, and we never stop learning and encouraging each other to reach these goals.
The SMS Award is given to one student in grades 4-8 each quarter. It is the highest honor given at St. Matthew School. Students nominate one of their peers by secret ballot. The SMS recipient is then selected from the top two nominees in each grade. Faculty members without a homeroom class select the winners by secret ballot. This most distinguished award is given for consistently Seeking Knowledge + Modeling Christ + Serving Others. SMS Award recipients are taken to a special lunch at Dalton's Grill and a trip to a bookstore. They each choose a book and a special label is placed in the book to recognize their award.
